We grew up on opposite sides of the continent, in two different countries, with disparate cultural backgrounds, but in many ways it seems like our union was fated! Our dads both attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating one year apart; our moms were both medical technicians who worked for the university; and from a young age, we both fostered a passion for cooking that blossomed into an appreciation for good wine.
One of the best-kept secrets in New York City is that Del Posto holds a $5 wine class on Saturday afternoons. One fateful day in 2013, Jess decided to stop by the class with her friend Lauren, who was visiting from San Francisco. The wine was spectacular and the setting unparalleled, but Jess also noticed that one of the sommeliers was strikingly handsome and gracious... [spoiler alert: It was Luke!]
All summer long, Jess went to the wine class, which Luke occasionally taught. One afternoon, Luke gave Jess his number "just in case" she needed help getting a reservation at DP—he asked her out the next day!
We hung out every day that week, eating amazing meals around the city and talking late into the night.
We shared many adventures and supported each other as Jess finished her Ph.D. thesis and Luke studied for the advanced sommelier exam. We also fulfilled a lifelong dream of getting a puppy (even though Luke is deathly allergic to dogs!).
Nika came to us all the way from Argentina and she was the best puppy in the world. We spent two beautiful years with her, and although our beloved girl left us far too soon, she taught us how to cherish one another and how to be a family. We miss her every day.
